The Dinos 1sts & 2nds traveled to Edmonton this past weekend to play a couple of games, the big one being the Little Brown Jug game vs the Bears. Weather in Edmonton was perfect for rugby and all the action was at the Ellerslie Rugby Park. The Dinos Red Squad were first on the pitch playing against an Edmonton Nor’Wester team in what was supposed to be a friendly… needless to say the opposition didn’t get the message and put out a much bigger, older, more experienced group and completely controlled the game from start to finish. The Dinos never gave up and played hard even when, through injury, we were down to 13 and the ‘friendly’ opposition just kept the pedal down with full complement on their side!
The Dinos Black Squad then took the field vs the Bears who, after losing the Brown Jug the last 8 years in a row, came out more prepared and fired up than I have seen since the resurgence of the competition in 2001. It was a very tight battle and the Bears had the upper hand in the first half leading 10 – 5. The Dinos gradually started taking control in the second half out scoring the Bears 10 – 5. Yep, final whistle 15 all tie game! In competitions such as this defending team retains trophy when there is a tie, but Dean Kittleson pushed for overtime and the Bears were more than happy to go along. A few of the Dinos thought we should just shake hands, but the captain and a couple of the senior players stepped up and pumped the boys up to continue the momentum they had established in the second half. Two 10 minute periods were played with he Dinos scoring 2 tries, ending with a 25 – 15 win and a definitive retention of the coveted Jug!
