2014 University 7’s Update

2.Dinos7s2014The Dinos opened with a 24 – 5 win over Regina, then 15 – 5 over UBC Okanagan and next up Waterloo an unknown.  The boys came out flat and ended up on the wrong end of a 26 – 12 score line.  To get through to top 8 they needed a win plus a Waterloo loss…..the win came against Vancouver Island University 38 – 0 however Waterloo won their last pool game and moved on.  It was on to determine the best of the rest and in another game where the boys struggled UBC Okanagan exacted revenge for the earlier loss beating the Dinos 15 – 0.  The final game for the boys was against cross town rivals Mount Royal and the Dinos came out on top 17 – 0.  It must be said that the last 2 games were played with a short bench as we had two players out with injury.  Considering the team has not practiced outside or had any tackling practice or ‘hits’ since end of October, a 4 win 2 loss record is very respectable.

2013 CanWests Update

image004 image001On day one of the tournament the Dinos played against U of Lethbridge and although they didn’t play to their potential they did win 48 – 0.  This win automatically confirmed their status for the Hindson Cup, but there was more important business to attend to on day 2 as they were to play the provincial nemesis UA Bears in the final.  The Bears, in my mind, upset the Mt Royal team in the first game of the tournament earning the right to also qualify for the Hindson Cup.  The Bears were a completely different team this weekend than the one the Dinos met in the Brown Jug 3 weeks earlier and right from the get go knew they were in for a much tougher game this time.  The Dinos were on the board early with a couple of unconverted tries vs 2 Bears penalties and the game stayed 10 – 6 into the second half.  The Dinos then gradually took control with 2 more tries one of which was converted, final score 22 – 6.  This was probably just the kind of game they needed as they will come up against much stronger competition in Kelowna.

2013 Annual Alumni Game

AlumniGame2013Stags – we had another successful day of Stags vs Dino’s rugby at the CRU this past weekend.  It was a great day for rugby, mid 20s, clear blue sky and very little wind.  As in past years the agenda for the day was the alumni game first followed by Dino’s vs MRU in an exhibition game.  For the alumni game I once again cornered the referee to outline our old boys vs the young guns rules and he was very receptive to the ‘when in doubt favor the old guys’ rule!  We started as always with some touch before going to full contact except for the scrums which were un-contested.  Both the touch and contact games were very entertaining back and forth affairs which were won by the Stags.  We were a few players short so did make use of some of the ‘soon to be Stags’ Dino’s.  We had about 3 or 4 subs while the Dino’s had 20 + players to draw from on the sidelines.  We are again blessed with some 60 – 70 players in the Dino’s camp this year.  Alumni present were, from the 70s, Dean Kittleson, Al Laberge, Bob Moody, Dex Nelson and John Pearce.  The majority of the Stags were graduates from early to mid 2000s and were Scott Appleby, Allan Arndt, Zac Borrows, Will Cuthbert, Kevin Duffy, Dan Gadicke, Sean Gibson, Andy Gossen, Taylor Graham, Jinxy Long, Dave Lougheed, Mitch McLeod, Tyler Ogilvie, Bruno Payette, Martin Rejman, Graham Selwood and Ian Thorner.  If I missed anyone I apologize.

Games: September 14th

Reminder about the games this weekend that are going on at the CRU. We will be having two games:

Black Squad vs. MRU (12:30 pm kickoff)
Red Squad vs. Alumni (11 am kickoff)

Everyone is to meet at the red paperclips, just outside the Olympic Oval, at 9:15 AM so we can all carpool down together. Everyone who has their own vehicle should bring it so we can get those who don’t down for the games. See you all bright and early tomorrow morning.
